Hari Raya Haji is a day of prayers and sacrifices

Gohar, 55, has struggled to earn a living since losing both of his legs in an earthquake. He lives with his 4 children in Daban, Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

“I rely on charity from relatives or the community to meet the basic needs of my family as I am not able to do any work due to my disability,” he explains. “There is no other source of income for me except charity.”

Gohar lives in a remote area of Daban with poor access to healthcare facilities, making life challenging for him and his children – 2 of whom also have a disability.

While 2 of his children are in a free school, the costs of their uniforms and other supplies are difficult to meet.

Celebrating Eid with meat

Last year, family was one of 4,800 in Pakistan-administered Kashmir to receive qurbani meat packs from Islamic Relief to help them celebrate Eid al-Adha.

“Eid al-Adha (Hari Raya Haji) is a day of sacrifice and provision of meat to families who cannot afford their own qurbani. It is a day for prayers and sacrifices for needy persons,” Gohar says, adding that he wishes he could contribute himself, but cannot afford to.

“[My family] consumes meat only on special occasions, such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, with the support of the community. We are not able to buy meat on our own.”
