The Philippines has been hit by Cyclone Goni, the strongest typhoon in the world this year. It struck Catanduanes Island in the Bicol region of Luzon with gusts of up to 190 mph, causing major flooding and mudslides.

Sixteen people have now been reported to have lost their lives as a result, and the death toll is expected to rise further.

Thousands of homes and buildings have been damaged or completely destroyed, leaving over 345,000 people sheltering in evacuation centres, following the devastating events of 1 November.

Almost one million people have also been evacuated from the projected path of the cyclone.

Electricity, water and phone networks have been impacted across the region, and many roads are completely inaccessible.

Islamic Relief are working with partner organisations in the area in order to establish the most effective way to support affected families.
